Adam Wainwright issued two-out walks to Minnesota’s Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau in the first inning Friday. Both scored and that was the difference in the Cardinals‘ third straight loss and fourth in five games.

“It all comes down to the first inning,” said Wainwright, 8-5. “Two two-out walks and they both came around to score. We lose the ball game by two runs. Bad job on my part.”

Wainwright actually pitched strongly after the first inning as he managed seven innings, giving him 14 consecutive starts of six innings or more. But the Cardinals didn’t have a hit in seven at-bats with a man in scoring position, including two at-bats in the eighth and three in the ninth.

Cardinals Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Chris Carpenter has come all the way back to his Cy Young form of 2005 and world-championship status of 2006, but he can’t do much without support.

Carpenter allowed hits (four) in only one of his seven innings Thursday against the Mets and threw only 18 balls out of 82 pitches. But in losing his second game against five victories, Carpenter received only two runs of support. In his other loss at Cleveland, the Cardinals didn’t score for him, and they’ve tallied just 36 runs in his 10 starts overall.

Carpenter threw five 1-2-3 innings out of the seven he pitched. In the decisive fourth inning, a three-run frame, he allowed a ground single to left by Luis Castillo, David Wright’s scratch single that Carpenter deflected, and a game-tying bloop single to right by Ryan…

Cardinals Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Right-hander Brad Thompson, impressive as a fill-in starter in his first few tries, hasn’t clinched a permanent spot just yet. After winning back-to-back interleague starts at Cleveland and Kansas City, Thompson was cuffed around Wednesday for eight hits and five runs in five innings by the Mets.

“It was just one of those games when I made my pitches, I got groundball outs,” said Thompson (2-3), “and when I didn’t, they were banging the ball around a little bit.”

The Cardinals bullpen, a staple much of the season, wasn’t very good, giving up six runs in three innings. However, some shoddy defense—two errors and a pitcher (Chris Perez) forgetting to cover first base—didn’t help matters in the late innings.

“It went from a tough loss to a sloppy loss,”…
